Metaphor and symbols are key in my work. My intimacy with the different materials I use makes the process the most important aspect of the work to me. Texture and gesture become the vernacular of each peace with which I try to present my personal, individual African experience. I employ my own experience in Diaspora as a window through which the richness of the African diasporic experience can be viewed. The manner in which transcendent values of my culture are passed on by storytelling has influenced the work immensely. Most of it is attached by symbol and metaphor to Zimbabwean folklore. The experience of my country as it is today and of its history become evident in my attempt to fuse the traditional and the contemporary. I have tried to create work as tangible and real as the emotional understanding of travel in foreign domains. I can only hope that through my encounter of trying to harmonize the subject and the object there emerges a creation with which the viewer may share an intimacy.
